X-2 feels more like an anime, thanks to the chapter-to-chapter episodic storytelling, and the lighthearted tone that comes from a world that has survived a major catastrophe. It was a little dour with Yuna questioning her purpose in life, and Tidus questioning his very existence in the world. Speaking of the story of Final Fantasy X, the TL DR version of the story is that the cast is looking to stop the cycle of destruction in Spira by going against the world’s religion. Yuna as a Sphere Hunter, on the other hand, lets her go on a scavenger hunt around the world in any way she wants. The same holds true for the story of the game, where Final Fantasy X became a sort of tour of Spira, since it centred around the pilgrimage of Yuna as a summoner. While Final Fantasy X-2 doesn’t have an open world for players to explore since it still uses the same engine and assets from the original, the game is more open and lets players explore the world around them from the get-go through the airship, Celsius. One of Final Fantasy X’s biggest criticisms is that the game was too linear: the story led the player along, and the maps in the game were small, which don’t allow the usual open-world exploration that previous entries were known for. They also brought back the Active Time Battle mechanics, which allowed more than one action to take place at a time in a battle. Final Fantasy X even simplified it further, with characters like Wakka being the only character who can harm flying enemies, or Auron being the only one who can break armored enemies’ defences.įinal Fantasy X-2 lets the three main characters to switch between any job class in battle, which enabled a more free-flowing version of the combat system that was not as rigid as X’s. The job system was relegated to side-games like Final Fantasy Tactics, as the mainline games tried out different battle systems.įinal Fantasy X followed in the steps of Final Fantasy IV, VI, and IX, where party members had set classes and expertise in battles. Subsequent games like Final Fantasy III and V refined this system even further and allowed players to create their party in any way they like. As we return to old locales, we see how familiar faces get to enjoy their lives without the threat of Sin looming over them.įinal Fantasy is defined by their unique job class system, which has been around since the very first game. While not as dark and dour as the first game, we get to see the world of Spira in a state of peace. With Yuna as the main protagonist this time around, she and her cousin Rikku and newcomer Paine must uncover the mystery of Yuna’s recurring dreams of Tidus’s return, and the power struggle that their world is going through after their victory in the first game. They might have saved the day, though a sacrifice had to be made.įinal Fantasy X-2 picks up two years after the end of Final Fantasy X, and while most of the other party members from the game have found their happy ending, Yuna still has to cope with Tidus being gone.

Final Fantasy X had a bittersweet ending, with the main character Tidus disappearing into nothingness while he hugs deuteragonist Yuna.

We never see what comes after, at least up to 2003. Most Final Fantasy games end with the world-ending final boss defeated, and the heroes standing triumphantly as the sun sets.
